elie-pleatsMicro-pleats made a splash this spring on the fashion runways with designers such as Stella McCartney and Sonia Rykiel featuring flowing, folded dresses. Pleats aren’t always the most forgiving style but lightweight fabrics for summer are beautiful and breezy. Cinch with a thin belt—above the waist for a youthful, empire look or at the waist for a more classic style.

As layers come off this summer, do the opposite with jewelry: layer multiple chains to create a bold statement. There aren’t many rules to the look. Make sure you vary the lengths of the chains to create almost a waterfall effect. Intermingle gold and silver, pendants and chains, and accessorize in a playful way. Long layered necklaces also look great with silk blouses, a decidedly European look.

Of course, men also can accessorize this summer, but you won’t find a chain around their necks. Instead, bow ties are a dapper style statement that can be worn at a casual get-together or a more formal summer affair. Ties often have a corporate connotation while bow ties offer men an opportunity to express themselves in a sartorial way. Experiment with daring colors, pink or mint, and forgo a jacket for rolled up sleeves and suspenders. But don’t even think about buying a clip-on style—those are for kids—learn to tie one by hand.
