SUMMARY:Fairgrounds Ideal Home Show
DESCRIPTION:The long-running Fairgrounds Ideal Home Show is celebrating North Carolina’s storied barbecue culture when it returns to the NC State Fairgrounds September 18-20 by bringing in legacy barbecue names and pitmasters to teach (and feed) audiences their craft. \nThe three-day show brings together hundreds of local experts in home improvement in one place and picks up where online research leaves off – by providing real world advice specific to each individual project. Guests can check out the latest home improvement products\, get advice from presenters on the Fresh Ideas Stage\, participate in interactive workshops and at this show – taste world-class barbecue from industry legends. \nJust in time for tailgate season\, the Fairgrounds Ideal Home Show is rounding up some of the biggest names in North Carolina barbecue to share trade secrets and samples. \nPitmaster Ryan Mitchelll appears at the show on Saturday\, September 19 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Ryan was born and raised in a barbecue family as the son of Ed Mitchell\, well-known for Eastern North Carolina whole hog barbecue. Long before the Pitmaster fame Ryan could be found by the side of his grandparents\, Willie and Doretha Mitchell\, day in and day out helping out in their small corner store off 301 HWY in Wilson. \nAfter high school\, Ryan attended East Carolina University to pursue his dreams of playing college football and earning a degree in economics. He spent eight years working in commercial and investment banking for some of the nation’s largest firms before he re-evaluated his professional life and decided it time to leave his 60 hour a week desk job and return to his roots and passion. \nIn addition to Ryan\, another third generation NC pitmaster – Sam Jones will be onstage on Friday\, September 18 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The Sam Jones legacy began with Sam’s grandad\, Peter Jones\, who opened the Skylight Inn in 1947 at age 17. Sam Jones is known for Eastern Carolina barbecue and chopped whole hog barbecue.

SUMMARY:Celebrating the Legacy of Alma Thomas and Black Artistry
DESCRIPTION:“Not Unlike Sunlight”: Celebrating the Legacy of Alma Thomas and Black Artistry Though Primary and Colorstruck! \nJoin acclaimed writers Alexis Pauline Gumbs and Richard J. In Primary\, Gumbs writes as a spiritual student of Thomas\, offering a poetic response to Thomas’s life and work\, while Colorstruck! draws upon Powell’s expansive scholarship on color\, Black art\, and visual culture\, with Thomas among the artists considered throughout the book. \nAs the first graduate of Howard University’s art department\, Thomas holds an important place within the history of HBCU arts education and American abstraction. Through readings and conversation\, Gumbs and Powell will reflect on her creative legacy\, the possibilities of writing alongside visual art\, and the many shades of Black artistic expression that continue to emerge in her wake. \nAbout the Authors \nDr. Alexis Pauline Gumbs\, author of Survival is a Promise: The Eternal Life of Audre Lorde is a queer Black feminist love evangelist and an aspirational cousin to all life. A recipient of the Windham-Campbell Prize in Poetry\, the National Endowment of the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship and a National Humanities Center Fellowship\, Dr. Gumbs lives and loves in Durham\, North Carolina. \nDr. Richard J. Powell is the John Spencer Bassett Professor of Art & Art History at Duke University\, where he has taught since 1989. Powell\, an authority on African American art\, has organized numerous art exhibitions\, most notably: The Blues Aesthetic: Black Culture and Modernism (1989); Rhapsodies in Black: Art of the Harlem Renaissance (1997); To Conserve A Legacy: American Art at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (1999); Back to Black: Art\, Cinema\, and the Racial Imaginary (2005); and Archibald Motley: Jazz Age Modernist (2014). Powell has published books on numerous topics\, including Homecoming: The Art and Life of William H. Johnson (1991)\, Black Art: A Cultural History (1997\, 2002 & 2021)\, Cutting a Figure: Fashioning Black Portraiture (2008)\, Going There: Black Visual Satire (2020)\, and Colorstruck!
