SUMMARY:Swift Night Out at The Willard
DESCRIPTION:Learn about chimney swifts on The Willard Rooftop on Monday\, September 21. Join us in our Horizon Ballroom at 6pm for a program given by John Gerwin\, Research Curator of Ornithology at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences and Wake Audubon board member. John will spend about 45 minutes discussing these fascinating birds that breed and roost in chimneys in eastern North America before migrating to a small section of the western Amazon region. \nAfter the program\, grab our featured drink from The Willard bar\, and then join members of Wake Audubon on the rooftop terrace to hopefully witness chimney swifts in action as they begin to swarm and swirl through the sky. (No guarantees that we’ll actually see the birds – nature is fickle – but we saw many swarms from the rooftop in the past years.) \nFeatured Drink: The Chimney Bird | $13\nKill Devil Pecan Rum\, Campari\, pineapple juice\, lime juice\, demerara syrup. Garnished with a dehydrated orange. \nThis event is free and open to all.

SUMMARY:The Art and Science of Plant Care
DESCRIPTION:Caring for plants is both an art and a science—part intuition\, part know-how. Every gardener\, from beginner to expert\, faces the same essential questions: When should I prune? How much should I water? What’s the best way to plant\, fertilize\, or repot? In this class\, Bryce Lane brings decades of horticultural expertise to demystify these everyday tasks\, showing you not just what to do\, but why it works. \nOver eight weeks\, you’ll explore the fundamental practices that keep gardens thriving\, learning how to perform each one with confidence and purpose. You’ll uncover the science behind good technique—understanding how soil\, water\, nutrients\, and plant biology interact—while also developing the practical judgment that comes only with experience. \nEach session focuses on one key aspect of plant care\, building a complete toolkit for growing healthier\, more resilient plants in any garden setting.

SUMMARY:Responsible Gardening in a Changing Climate with Emmy-Award winning professor Bryce Lane
DESCRIPTION:For generations\, gardeners have relied on familiar rhythms and dependable rules of thumb. But as temperatures shift\, weather patterns become less predictable\, and pests and plant stresses change\, many gardeners are finding themselves unsure of what practices still work—and what needs to change. \nIn this 6-week course\, you’ll learn practical strategies for gardening responsibly and resiliently in the face of a changing climate. Together\, we’ll explore how climate change is affecting home landscapes and gardens\, from rising temperatures and shifting hardiness zones to changing rainfall patterns\, longer growing seasons\, and increasing pest pressures. \nAdvanced registration required.

SUMMARY:Venice: New Paintings by Bert Sult
DESCRIPTION:Bert Sult is a North Carolina-based architect and watercolor artist who has established himself in both fields with remarkable versatility. As an architect\, he designed many notable buildings in the Raleigh area\, including Jones Chapel at Meredith College\, the Raleigh Municipal Building and Complex\, Cary Medical Center\, and the Whitaker Center. \nAs a watercolorist\, Bert Sult focuses on impressionistic watercolor street scenes from interesting locales\, with particular emphasis on European subjects. Sult’s romantic portrayals of historic street scenes and buildings from Europe are executed in transparent\, flowing watercolors\, showcasing his mastery of this difficult and unpredictable medium. Like a modern-day Georgia O’Keeffe\, Bert Sult loves to play with the fluidity of the medium.
