SUMMARY:“A False Perspective” Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:Author Scott Gibson will visit Mordecai Historic Park to speak about his new book “A False Perspective: The True Story of the Cornstalk Fences in New Orleans.” \nThe Cornstalk Fences are now monuments in New Orleans\, but their fascinating story is directly linked to Raleigh and a local family in antebellum North Carolina. The family chose an instrument that could have generated a timeless legacy\, a tool not just a fence\, but it is now an epitaph. \nIn his new book\, Gibson explores the surprising connection between the Cornstalk Fences in New Orleans and the Mordecai family in Raleigh. He will discuss the book\, answer questions\, and copies will be available for sale and signings. \nThis event is free and open to the public. For more information\, please call Mordecai Historic Park at 919-996-4364.

SUMMARY:FRESH 2026 Cultural Leaders Panel
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the connection between curators and artists from Artspace’s current and former Creative Directors! \nWhat does artistic excellence look like? How do curators make decisions? How can arts organizations best support artists in today’s world? \nThis panel discussion brings together three current and former Artspace Creative Directors: Jonh Blanco\, Annah Lee\, and Lia Newman. \nIn connection with FRESH 2026\, Artspace’s biennial exhibition of North Carolina artists\, the conversation will explore the relationship between curators and artists in today’s contemporary art landscape. \nParticipants will learn about how artists are selected and supported by arts institutions\, the individual curatorial approaches of each panelist\, and the opportunities and challenges of the field. The panel discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A. \nAbout the Panelists \nJonh Blanco – current Creative Director\, Artspace \nJonh Blanco is the Creative Director at Artspace\, where they lead the organization’s curatorial vision for exhibitions\, residencies\, and artist-centered programs. A Filipinx-American artist\, curator\, and cultural leader\, Jonh’s undisciplined practice engages community\, accessibility\, care\, and collective imagination through performance art\, education\, and social practice. They earned a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to joining Artspace\, Jonh served as Museum Manager at 21c Museum Hotel Durham. Their work is grounded in the belief that artists and cultural organizations can create meaningful spaces for belonging\, dialogue\, and positive community change. \nAnnah Lee – Manager\, Holly Springs Cultural Center (Artspace Creative Director: 2015–2025) \nAnnah Lee has worked in the visual arts field in her hometown of Raleigh\, NC for the past 15 years\, where she is a member of the City’s Public Art and Design Board. Since 2025\, she has worked in the town of Holly Springs as Manager of the Cultural Center. Annah received her Master’s Degree in Art History and completed her PhD coursework at UNC-Chapel Hill. Having forged strong interpersonal relationships with artists\, institutions\, and community members to ensure programming is relevant to our communities\, Lee programs art and artists who respond to current cultural issues. Using art as a lens to explore and understand problems\, behaviors\, and events we collectively face\, while placing a strong emphasis on process and technical mastery\, Lee continues to expand access for all to engage with art as a vehicle to appreciate and understand human experience. \nLia Newman – Director/Curator\, Davidson College Art Galleries (Artspace Director of Programs + Exhibitions\, 2002–2012) \nLia Rose Newman has been Director/Curator of the Davidson College Art Galleries since January 2013. In her current role\, she provides leadership for the advancement of visual art at Davidson College\, curating exhibitions and related programming and providing strategic vision to create an inclusive\, interdisciplinary center of learning. SUMMARY:An Evening in Seoul: A dinner inspired by Maybe Happy Ending
DESCRIPTION:The lights dim\, the vinyl spins and Seoul comes to life one course at a time. Join the AAA Four Diamond Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club for “An Evening in Seoul\,” a one-night-only immersive dining event inspired by the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Maybe Happy Ending\, appearing at Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC) from Oct. 13–18. \nGuests will gather in Vista Restaurant for an intimate dinner celebrating Korean fusion cuisine and the nostalgic\, hopeful world of the musical\, set in a near-future Seoul where two retired helper robots forge an unexpected bond. Their heartfelt journey of love\, technology and human connection inspires this distinctive culinary experience\, extending the magic of the theater beyond the stage. \nArea Executive Chef Troy Stauffer and the award-winning Fairview Dining Room team have designed an unforgettable prix-fixe menu featuring a fragrant Abalone Hot Pot with langoustine\, clams\, daikon and matsutake\, a delicate Eel course drawing on the bold flavors of ginseng and kimchi\, and tender Binchotan-Grilled A5 Wagyu with aged soy\, tteok and pear\, followed by a rich Black Sesame Cake with red date\, pine nut and honey. Each course is expertly paired with inventive cocktails or wines\, including a crisp Persimmon Soju Spritz\, a fiery Gochujang Paloma\, a complex Black Sesame Espresso Martini and more. \nThroughout the evening\, mid-century jazz spun live on vinyl by Hunky Dory Durham will set the mood\, while glowing décor inspired by the musical’s firefly motif\, amber candlelight and vintage accents create a captivating scene. Guests will learn a traditional Korean toast and take home a special gift to remember their night. \nThe dinner starts at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday\, Oct. 15. For those attending the 7:30 p.m. performance of Maybe Happy Ending\, the soirée will conclude with enough time to make it to curtain. Guests do not need a ticket to the show to attend and are welcome to join for the dinner alone or pair it with a performance on any night during the run. Tickets to the show are sold separately through the DPAC website: https://www.dpacnc.com/events/detail/maybe-happy-ending-2026. \nSeating is limited for this exclusive event. Tickets are $225\, plus tax and service charge\, and may be purchased via OpenTable: https://www.opentable.com/booking/experiences-availability?rid=15346&restref=15346&experienceId=782363&utm_source=external&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=shared . \nTicket sales are non-refundable. Due to the nature of this specially curated menu\, accommodations for dietary restrictions and preferences may be limited. \nClaire Kwon and Steven Huynh in MAYBE HAPPY ENDING.
