SUMMARY:50 Brilliant Plant Combinations with Bryce Lane
DESCRIPTION:Mondays\, August 17 through September 28\, 2026 — 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm (No class on Monday\, September 7). \nTo celebrate the JC Raulston Arboretum’s 50th anniversary\, this 6-week course explores 50 brilliant plant combinations that showcase the power of pairing plants with purpose. From colorful annuals and dependable perennials to shrubs\, trees\, and vines\, we’ll examine combinations that stand out for their beauty\, ecological value\, seasonal interest\, and practical performance in the landscape. In this class\, you’ll learn how different plants can complement one another through color\, texture\, bloom time\, structure\, habitat support\, and garden function. Along the way\, Bryce will share practical insights into plant selection\, placement\, maintenance\, and design strategies that help these combinations succeed in real home gardens — not just on paper.

SUMMARY:The Art and Science of Plant Care
DESCRIPTION:Caring for plants is both an art and a science—part intuition\, part know-how. Every gardener\, from beginner to expert\, faces the same essential questions: When should I prune? How much should I water? What’s the best way to plant\, fertilize\, or repot? In this class\, Bryce Lane brings decades of horticultural expertise to demystify these everyday tasks\, showing you not just what to do\, but why it works. \nOver eight weeks\, you’ll explore the fundamental practices that keep gardens thriving\, learning how to perform each one with confidence and purpose. You’ll uncover the science behind good technique—understanding how soil\, water\, nutrients\, and plant biology interact—while also developing the practical judgment that comes only with experience. \nEach session focuses on one key aspect of plant care\, building a complete toolkit for growing healthier\, more resilient plants in any garden setting.

SUMMARY:Venice: New Paintings by Bert Sult
DESCRIPTION:Bert Sult is a North Carolina-based architect and watercolor artist who has established himself in both fields with remarkable versatility. As an architect\, he designed many notable buildings in the Raleigh area\, including Jones Chapel at Meredith College\, the Raleigh Municipal Building and Complex\, Cary Medical Center\, and the Whitaker Center. \nAs a watercolorist\, Bert Sult focuses on impressionistic watercolor street scenes from interesting locales\, with particular emphasis on European subjects. SUMMARY:The Americans: Silver Gelatin Photographs by Marsha Burns
DESCRIPTION:Marsha Burns transitioned from painting to photography in 1972\, eventually developing intimate figure studies in her Seattle studio that treated subjects as formal elements alongside light and reflective surfaces. A pivotal 1984 trip to Berlin redirected her work toward exploring personal identity through appearance\, a theme she carried through New York\, Rome\, Frankfurt\, and rural Washington State. Her authentic\, unstaged silver gelatin prints are now part of major museum collections worldwide\, including MoMA\, the Met\, and the Smithsonian.
