Powell is the John Spencer Bassett Professor of Art & Art History at Duke University\, where he has taught since 1989. Powell\, an authority on African American art\, has organized numerous art exhibitions\, most notably: The Blues Aesthetic: Black Culture and Modernism (1989); Rhapsodies in Black: Art of the Harlem Renaissance (1997); To Conserve A Legacy: American Art at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (1999); Back to Black: Art\, Cinema\, and the Racial Imaginary (2005); and Archibald Motley: Jazz Age Modernist (2014). Johnson (1991)\, Black Art: A Cultural History (1997\, 2002 & 2021)\, Cutting a Figure: Fashioning Black Portraiture (2008)\, Going There: Black Visual Satire (2020)\, and Colorstruck! SUMMARY:Swift Night Out at The Willard
DESCRIPTION:Learn about chimney swifts on The Willard Rooftop on Monday\, September 21. Join us in our Horizon Ballroom at 6pm for a program given by John Gerwin\, Research Curator of Ornithology at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences and Wake Audubon board member. (No guarantees that we’ll actually see the birds – nature is fickle – but we saw many swarms from the rooftop in the past years.) \nFeatured Drink: The Chimney Bird | $13\nKill Devil Pecan Rum\, Campari\, pineapple juice\, lime juice\, demerara syrup. Garnished with a dehydrated orange. \nThis event is free and open to all.

SUMMARY:The Art and Science of Plant Care
DESCRIPTION:Caring for plants is both an art and a science—part intuition\, part know-how. Every gardener\, from beginner to expert\, faces the same essential questions: When should I prune? How much should I water? What’s the best way to plant\, fertilize\, or repot? In this class\, Bryce Lane brings decades of horticultural expertise to demystify these everyday tasks\, showing you not just what to do\, but why it works. \nOver eight weeks\, you’ll explore the fundamental practices that keep gardens thriving\, learning how to perform each one with confidence and purpose. You’ll uncover the science behind good technique—understanding how soil\, water\, nutrients\, and plant biology interact—while also developing the practical judgment that comes only with experience. \nEach session focuses on one key aspect of plant care\, building a complete toolkit for growing healthier\, more resilient plants in any garden setting.

Together\, we’ll explore how climate change is affecting home landscapes and gardens\, from rising temperatures and shifting hardiness zones to changing rainfall patterns\, longer growing seasons\, and increasing pest pressures. \nAdvanced registration required.
