SUMMARY:Budding Explorers
DESCRIPTION:Calling all explorers! Join us for an exciting\, hands-on program where we’ll dive into the world of spiders as we discover why they build so many different kinds of webs! \nYouth participants\, accompanied by an adult\, will investigate the different kinds of spider webs\, make careful observations of webs in the garden\, and even get to design their own spider web. \nYou’ll also get an introduction to ecoEXPLORE\, an incentive-based community science program developed by The North Carolina Arboretum. By making real-world observations and completing fun challenges\, youth participants can earn badges and prizes throughout the year. \nThere is no need to have an ecoEXPLORE account prior to this program in order to participate. Program begins at the Visitor Center. Come dressed for the weather as this program will be held partly outdoors. In the event of inclement weather\, activities will be moved inside.

SUMMARY:Made by You: Japanese Boro Textile Stitching
DESCRIPTION:Made by You: Japanese Boro Textile Stitching is a hands-on introduction to the Japanese art of visible mending\, transforming fabric scraps into a one-of-a-kind stitched textile. \nThis workshop introduces participants to boro\, a centuries-old Japanese textile tradition where worn or mended fabric is patched and stitched together. Participants will look at boro’s history and the philosophy behind it\, including the idea of wabi-sabi\, finding beauty in imperfection and visible signs of use. Then\, the workshop will teach foundational hand-stitching techniques\, including running stitch and simple patch attachment\, before designing their own layout using a mix of provided fabric scraps. Everyone will leave with a stitched textile piece of their own and a working knowledge of a technique they can keep building on at home. \nThis class is for beginners of all skill levels\, ages 10+\, all supplies provided. However\, participants are welcome to bring fabric scraps from home with personal meaning (an old shirt\, a worn pair of jeans\, fabric with sentimental value) to incorporate into their piece. \nThis workshop will take place outdoors at the Hub RTP stage. In the event of unfavorable weather\, we do have an indoor backup plan. Due to the small-scale format of this project\, each participant needs to purchase their own ticket in advance.

SUMMARY:Fairgrounds Ideal Home Show
DESCRIPTION:The long-running Fairgrounds Ideal Home Show is celebrating North Carolina’s storied barbecue culture when it returns to the NC State Fairgrounds September 18-20 by bringing in legacy barbecue names and pitmasters to teach (and feed) audiences their craft. \nThe three-day show brings together hundreds of local experts in home improvement in one place and picks up where online research leaves off – by providing real world advice specific to each individual project. Guests can check out the latest home improvement products\, get advice from presenters on the Fresh Ideas Stage\, participate in interactive workshops and at this show – taste world-class barbecue from industry legends. \nJust in time for tailgate season\, the Fairgrounds Ideal Home Show is rounding up some of the biggest names in North Carolina barbecue to share trade secrets and samples. \nPitmaster Ryan Mitchelll appears at the show on Saturday\, September 19 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Ryan was born and raised in a barbecue family as the son of Ed Mitchell\, well-known for Eastern North Carolina whole hog barbecue. Long before the Pitmaster fame Ryan could be found by the side of his grandparents\, Willie and Doretha Mitchell\, day in and day out helping out in their small corner store off 301 HWY in Wilson. \nAfter high school\, Ryan attended East Carolina University to pursue his dreams of playing college football and earning a degree in economics. He spent eight years working in commercial and investment banking for some of the nation’s largest firms before he re-evaluated his professional life and decided it time to leave his 60 hour a week desk job and return to his roots and passion. \nIn addition to Ryan\, another third generation NC pitmaster – Sam Jones will be onstage on Friday\, September 18 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The Sam Jones legacy began with Sam’s grandad\, Peter Jones\, who opened the Skylight Inn in 1947 at age 17. Sam Jones is known for Eastern Carolina barbecue and chopped whole hog barbecue.

SUMMARY:Most Delicious Poison
DESCRIPTION:Join the Garden Forum Collaborative for a book talk! The JC Raulston Arboretum has joined with the North Carolina Botanical Garden Foundation\, Sarah P Duke Gardens\, Durham Garden Forum\, and Durham County Master Gardeners to bring you a night with Dr. Noah Whiteman\, author of “Most Delicious Poison.” \nBased on cutting-edge science in the fields of evolution\, chemistry\, and neuroscience\, “Most Delicious Poison” reveals the origins of toxins produced by plants\, mushrooms\, microbes and even some animals\, the mechanisms that animals evolved to overcome them\, and how a co-evolutionary arms race made its way into the human experience. This perpetual chemical war not only drove the diversification of life on Earth\, but is also intimately tied to our own successes and failures. You will never look at a houseplant\, mushroom\, fruit\, vegetable or even the last 500 years of human history\, the same way again.

SUMMARY:The Americans: Silver Gelatin Photographs by Marsha Burns
DESCRIPTION:Marsha Burns transitioned from painting to photography in 1972\, eventually developing intimate figure studies in her Seattle studio that treated subjects as formal elements alongside light and reflective surfaces. A pivotal 1984 trip to Berlin redirected her work toward exploring personal identity through appearance\, a theme she carried through New York\, Rome\, Frankfurt\, and rural Washington State. Her authentic\, unstaged silver gelatin prints are now part of major museum collections worldwide\, including MoMA\, the Met\, and the Smithsonian.
