SUMMARY:First Friday with Little Raleigh Radio Featuring the Veldt
DESCRIPTION:Little Raleigh Radio is bringing a new listening party series: Groove History to the City of Raleigh Museum.\nJoin us for a live performance by the Veldt\, interviews with the band\, and listen to their 1998 record\, Illuminated. Stop by the museum from 6 – 9 p.m. to get in on the action. The Veldt will play around 7:45 p.m. \nAbout Little Raleigh Radio\nLittle Raleigh Radio is a fully independent community-powered internet radio station that amplifies creative audio entertainment and educational opportunities for the people of Raleigh\, North Carolina. Groove History is a collaboration with the City of Raleigh Museum\, exploring records that showcase Raleigh’s creative capital\, rich roots\, and artistic direction. \nThe Veldt\nAbout the Veldt\nRaleigh’s the Veldt are pioneers of shogaze rock. Founded by twins Daniel Chavis (vocals\, guitar) and Danny Chavis (guitar)\, The Veldt released four incredible albums in the 90s starting with the standouts Marigolds and Afrodisiac. However\, their first record\, Illuminated 1989\, was mysteriously shelved amidst an internal A & R staffing shakeup at Capitol Records. \nIn November 2023\, North Carolina’s 5BC records and Portland’s Little Cloud Records helped get the rights back to Illuminated 1989. Despite being 30 years old\, the album still feels ahead of its time with vocals that are clear and full of emotion\, complementing the glimmering wall of music rather than allowing it to be absorbed. \nThe record is proving as foundational now as it would have in the late 80s\, and Little Raleigh Radio’s Groove History is pleased to showcase it at the City of Raleigh Museum’s First Friday event.

SUMMARY:Friends of the Arboretum Lecture
DESCRIPTION:We’ve all heard the stories of J. C. Raulston traveling the country and giving away plants\, but how did his plant introductions and ideas influence local gardeners\, landscape designers and early JCRA volunteers in creating their own gardens? \nSuzanne Edney is uniquely qualified to answer this question: she is all of the above. A local gardener and the creator of Olderwood in Apex\, North Carolina\, Suzanne is an award-winning landscape designer and consultant as well as the third person to volunteer at the arboretum. \nIn this documentary film\, “Gardening in the Footsteps of J. C. Raulston – Olderwood\,” Suzanne takes us through the design considerations that transformed her barren-looking space into the extraordinary Piedmont woodland garden of today. Listening to Suzanne and following her through her garden\, you’ll learn about trees\, shrubs and ground covers that thrive in Triassic basin soil\, including the woody plants that J. C. encouraged her to try. \nAs a landscape design instructor and lecturer\, Suzanne shares her solutions to common gardening problems. What about that muddy area near the house? How can I make a comfortable place for people to sit in my garden? Should I incorporate art into the garden? \nWhether you’re motivated by the desire to enhance your plant knowledge\, get new ideas for your landscape\, or simply want to take a beautiful stroll through this lovely private garden\, please join us for the premiere of “Gardening in the Footsteps of J. C. Raulston – Olderwood.” \nSuzanne will be available in person to answer your questions after the film.

SUMMARY:National Root Beer Float Day
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate National Root Beer Float Day all month long at 10th & Terrace. In honor of National Root Beer Float Day\, 10th & Terrace will serve delicious root beer floats to benefit Duke Children’s Hospital\, our local member of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals\, throughout the month of August. \nRoot Beer Float Day holds special meaning to hotels that are part of the Marriott family like Residence Inn Raleigh Downtown as it harkens back to 1927\, when Marriott founders\, J. Today\, we’re carrying on their legacy by offering root beer floats supporting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals\, a cause close to Marriott’s heart since 1983. \nIndulge in your choice of an alcoholic or non-alcoholic root beer float at 10th & Terrace during the month of August. A portion of the proceeds from every purchase will be donated to Children’s Miracle Network to help provide care to local kids. Let’s make a splash for a great cause! \nClassic Root Beer: N/A option: Mug root beer\, whipped cream | $8 \nBoozy Root Beer: Vanilla-infused Svedka\, Mug Root Beer\, Whipped Cream | $12
