SUMMARY:The Midweek Program
DESCRIPTION:The richest soils on earth all started out as bare rock\, which should give you some hope if all you’re working with is red clay. And while soil development and enrichment can be a glacially slow process (geologically\, literally)\, that doesn’t mean you’re powerless to improve your soil here and now with plants. \nJoin Mark and Evan as they go through some of their favorite plants for improving soil\, from robust ruderal species that grow and flower beautifully no matter what you put them in\, to unexpected food crops that bust up hard clay like a pack of wild boars. Whether you’re reclaiming land\, prettying-up while preventing erosion\, or just want to make your soil as hospitable to life as it can possibly be\, you don’t want to miss this one!

SUMMARY:FRESH 2026 Cultural Leaders Panel
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the connection between curators and artists from Artspace’s current and former Creative Directors! \nWhat does artistic excellence look like? How do curators make decisions? How can arts organizations best support artists in today’s world? \nThis panel discussion brings together three current and former Artspace Creative Directors: Jonh Blanco\, Annah Lee\, and Lia Newman. \nIn connection with FRESH 2026\, Artspace’s biennial exhibition of North Carolina artists\, the conversation will explore the relationship between curators and artists in today’s contemporary art landscape. \nParticipants will learn about how artists are selected and supported by arts institutions\, the individual curatorial approaches of each panelist\, and the opportunities and challenges of the field. The panel discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A. \nAbout the Panelists \nJonh Blanco – current Creative Director\, Artspace \nJonh Blanco is the Creative Director at Artspace\, where they lead the organization’s curatorial vision for exhibitions\, residencies\, and artist-centered programs. A Filipinx-American artist\, curator\, and cultural leader\, Jonh’s undisciplined practice engages community\, accessibility\, care\, and collective imagination through performance art\, education\, and social practice. They earned a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to joining Artspace\, Jonh served as Museum Manager at 21c Museum Hotel Durham. Having forged strong interpersonal relationships with artists\, institutions\, and community members to ensure programming is relevant to our communities\, Lee programs art and artists who respond to current cultural issues. Using art as a lens to explore and understand problems\, behaviors\, and events we collectively face\, while placing a strong emphasis on process and technical mastery\, Lee continues to expand access for all to engage with art as a vehicle to appreciate and understand human experience. \nLia Newman – Director/Curator\, Davidson College Art Galleries (Artspace Director of Programs + Exhibitions\, 2002–2012) \nLia Rose Newman has been Director/Curator of the Davidson College Art Galleries since January 2013. SUMMARY:“A False Perspective” Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:Author Scott Gibson will visit Mordecai Historic Park to speak about his new book “A False Perspective: The True Story of the Cornstalk Fences in New Orleans.” \nThe Cornstalk Fences are now monuments in New Orleans\, but their fascinating story is directly linked to Raleigh and a local family in antebellum North Carolina. The family chose an instrument that could have generated a timeless legacy\, a tool not just a fence\, but it is now an epitaph. \nIn his new book\, Gibson explores the surprising connection between the Cornstalk Fences in New Orleans and the Mordecai family in Raleigh. He will discuss the book\, answer questions\, and copies will be available for sale and signings. \nThis event is free and open to the public.
