SUMMARY:“A False Perspective” Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:Author Scott Gibson will visit Mordecai Historic Park to speak about his new book “A False Perspective: The True Story of the Cornstalk Fences in New Orleans.” \nThe Cornstalk Fences are now monuments in New Orleans\, but their fascinating story is directly linked to Raleigh and a local family in antebellum North Carolina. The family chose an instrument that could have generated a timeless legacy\, a tool not just a fence\, but it is now an epitaph. \nIn his new book\, Gibson explores the surprising connection between the Cornstalk Fences in New Orleans and the Mordecai family in Raleigh. He will discuss the book\, answer questions\, and copies will be available for sale and signings. \nThis event is free and open to the public. For more information\, please call Mordecai Historic Park at 919-996-4364.

SUMMARY:FRESH 2026 Cultural Leaders Panel
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the connection between curators and artists from Artspace’s current and former Creative Directors! \nWhat does artistic excellence look like? How do curators make decisions? How can arts organizations best support artists in today’s world? \nThis panel discussion brings together three current and former Artspace Creative Directors: Jonh Blanco\, Annah Lee\, and Lia Newman. \nIn connection with FRESH 2026\, Artspace’s biennial exhibition of North Carolina artists\, the conversation will explore the relationship between curators and artists in today’s contemporary art landscape. \nParticipants will learn about how artists are selected and supported by arts institutions\, the individual curatorial approaches of each panelist\, and the opportunities and challenges of the field. The panel discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A. \nAbout the Panelists \nJonh Blanco – current Creative Director\, Artspace \nJonh Blanco is the Creative Director at Artspace\, where they lead the organization’s curatorial vision for exhibitions\, residencies\, and artist-centered programs. A Filipinx-American artist\, curator\, and cultural leader\, Jonh’s undisciplined practice engages community\, accessibility\, care\, and collective imagination through performance art\, education\, and social practice. They earned a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to joining Artspace\, Jonh served as Museum Manager at 21c Museum Hotel Durham. Their work is grounded in the belief that artists and cultural organizations can create meaningful spaces for belonging\, dialogue\, and positive community change. \nAnnah Lee – Manager\, Holly Springs Cultural Center (Artspace Creative Director: 2015–2025) \nAnnah Lee has worked in the visual arts field in her hometown of Raleigh\, NC for the past 15 years\, where she is a member of the City’s Public Art and Design Board. Since 2025\, she has worked in the town of Holly Springs as Manager of the Cultural Center. Annah received her Master’s Degree in Art History and completed her PhD coursework at UNC-Chapel Hill. Having forged strong interpersonal relationships with artists\, institutions\, and community members to ensure programming is relevant to our communities\, Lee programs art and artists who respond to current cultural issues. Using art as a lens to explore and understand problems\, behaviors\, and events we collectively face\, while placing a strong emphasis on process and technical mastery\, Lee continues to expand access for all to engage with art as a vehicle to appreciate and understand human experience. \nLia Newman – Director/Curator\, Davidson College Art Galleries (Artspace Director of Programs + Exhibitions\, 2002–2012) \nLia Rose Newman has been Director/Curator of the Davidson College Art Galleries since January 2013. In her current role\, she provides leadership for the advancement of visual art at Davidson College\, curating exhibitions and related programming and providing strategic vision to create an inclusive\, interdisciplinary center of learning. With specific interests in socially and politically-engaged art practices\, Newman’s curatorial projects have explored such topics as HIV\, climate catastrophe\, and immigration. She earned a BA in Art History and a BFA in General Studio with concentrations in sculpture and photography from Winthrop University\, and an MA from Duke University. \nAbout Artspace \nArtspace is a non-profit visual arts center located in Downtown Raleigh. SUMMARY:Plant ID for the Home Gardener: Fall Edition
DESCRIPTION:How do you tell one plant from another when they look almost exactly alike? Is that a boxwood or a Japanese holly? Which features actually matter when you’re trying to identify a plant? And what do all those botanical names really mean? Plant identification is both an art and a science\, and understanding plant nomenclature\, taxonomy\, and identification can make every gardener more knowledgeable and confident\, helping you select the right plants for your landscape and better understand how to care for them. \nIn this 5-week class\, we’ll explore the principles of plant identification. Rather than simply memorizing names\, you’ll learn how to look at a plant and understand what you’re seeing. We’ll examine leaves\, stems\, buds\, flowers\, fruits\, branching patterns\, and other characteristics that can help you narrow down an identification\, with particular attention to the trees\, shrubs\, and herbaceous plants commonly encountered in the garden and landscape. We’ll also explore how today’s plant identification apps\, digital keys\, and landscape planning tools can work alongside your knowledge to help you identify plants and determine where they might fit best. \nWhat You’ll Learn \nThe Fundamentals of Plant Identification — Learn how to observe plants systematically and recognize the characteristics that help distinguish one plant from another.\nPlant Anatomy and Morphology — Understand the basic structures and forms of plants and how they can be used as identification clues.\nPlant Names and Nomenclature — Learn the basics of botanical naming and taxonomy\, and how understanding plant relationships and names can make you a more informed gardener.\nIdentifying Similar Plants — Discover how to spot the subtle differences between plants that can look remarkably alike at first glance.\nUsing Modern Identification Tools — Explore plant identification apps\, digital keys\, and landscape planning tools that can supplement your knowledge and help you identify and select plants. \nWhy Attend? \nBecome a Better Plant Observer — Learn what to look for when you encounter an unfamiliar plant\, whether in your garden\, a nursery\, or out in the landscape.\nBuild Skills\, Not Just a Plant List — Develop an approach to identification that you can apply to plants you haven’t encountered before.\nMake Sense of Similar Plants — Learn to recognize the details that separate look-alike plants and turn confusion into confidence.\nLearn from an Expert — Bryce Lane is an award-winning educator known for making horticulture accessible\, engaging\, and fun.\nThis hybrid course is offered both in person at the JC Raulston Arboretum and online via Zoom\, giving you the flexibility to attend from anywhere. Rather than heading into the garden\, each week we’ll examine plant specimens together in the classroom\, giving in-person attendees the ability to handle and examine the samples while our camera gives our online participants a close-up view. All lectures will be recorded and shared with participants each week\, so you can revisit the material or catch up if you can’t make every session.

SUMMARY:The Midweek Program
DESCRIPTION:The richest soils on earth all started out as bare rock\, which should give you some hope if all you’re working with is red clay. And while soil development and enrichment can be a glacially slow process (geologically\, literally)\, that doesn’t mean you’re powerless to improve your soil here and now with plants. \nJoin Mark and Evan as they go through some of their favorite plants for improving soil\, from robust ruderal species that grow and flower beautifully no matter what you put them in\, to unexpected food crops that bust up hard clay like a pack of wild boars. Whether you’re reclaiming land\, prettying-up while preventing erosion\, or just want to make your soil as hospitable to life as it can possibly be\, you don’t want to miss this one!

DESCRIPTION:This talk follows Eileen and Mark’s journey to China in search of wild populations of Aucuba chinensis. Eileen will share the experience of collecting wild Aucuba material across its native range\, along with highlights from the expedition and the process of documenting populations for her research.
