SUMMARY:Dr Ride’s American Beach House presented by Brave New Classics
DESCRIPTION:Brave New Classics presents Liza Birkenmeier’s incandescent new play. It’s 1983\, the evening before Dr. Sally Ride’s historic space flight. Hundreds of miles from the launch a group of women with passionate opinions and no opportunities sit on a sweltering St. Louis rooftop\, watching life pass them by. Their uncharted desires bump up against American norms of sex and power in this intimate snapshot of queer anti-heroines. Running June 13-28 at Burning Coal Theatre in downtown Raleigh. \nPresented as part of Burning Coal Theatre’s annual 2nd Stage Series: https://burningcoal.org/second-stage. SUMMARY:The Art and Science of Plant Care
DESCRIPTION:Caring for plants is both an art and a science—part intuition\, part know-how. Every gardener\, from beginner to expert\, faces the same essential questions: When should I prune? How much should I water? What’s the best way to plant\, fertilize\, or repot? In this class\, Bryce Lane brings decades of horticultural expertise to demystify these everyday tasks\, showing you not just what to do\, but why it works. \nOver eight weeks\, you’ll explore the fundamental practices that keep gardens thriving\, learning how to perform each one with confidence and purpose. You’ll uncover the science behind good technique—understanding how soil\, water\, nutrients\, and plant biology interact—while also developing the practical judgment that comes only with experience. \nEach session focuses on one key aspect of plant care\, building a complete toolkit for growing healthier\, more resilient plants in any garden setting.

SUMMARY:Build Your Own Bee Hotel: A Native Pollinator Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that North Carolina is home to over 400 species of native bees? While honey bees often steal the spotlight\, these native pollinators are the real MVPs — pollinating more efficiently\, adapting to local ecosystems\, and playing a critical role in maintaining biodiversity. Unfortunately\, half of all bee species are currently in decline\, and many are at risk of extinction. It’s time to step up and give these unsung heroes the support they deserve! \nKick off Pollinator Week (June 22 — 28\, 2026) with us and special guest Karen DiDonato of Nurtured by Nature Growers for a hands-on\, educational experience that will leave both you and your garden buzzing with excitement! \nPart 1: Learn \nIn the first half of this in-person workshop\, Karen will introduce you to the fascinating world of native bees: who they are\, why they matter\, and how we can create spaces that support their survival — especially as they face mounting challenges from climate change and habitat loss. \nPart 2: Build \nThen\, roll up your sleeves and get crafty! In the second half\, you’ll build your very own bee hotel — a cozy habitat designed to attract and support gentle native bees like mason bees and leafcutter bees. All materials are provided and included in your registration fee. \nWhat You’ll Take Home: \nA completed bee hotel to help the pollinators in your home garden\nPractical knowledge on creating pollinator-friendly environments\nInspiration to make your space a haven for biodiversity\nWhether you’re a backyard gardener\, nature enthusiast\, or just curious about how you can make a difference\, this workshop is a perfect way to learn\, create\, and contribute to the preservation of our native pollinators. \nSpaces are limited — register early to reserve your spot and help support the bees who support us all!

SUMMARY:Venice: New Paintings by Bert Sult
DESCRIPTION:Bert Sult is a North Carolina-based architect and watercolor artist who has established himself in both fields with remarkable versatility. As an architect\, he designed many notable buildings in the Raleigh area\, including Jones Chapel at Meredith College\, the Raleigh Municipal Building and Complex\, Cary Medical Center\, and the Whitaker Center. \nAs a watercolorist\, Bert Sult focuses on impressionistic watercolor street scenes from interesting locales\, with particular emphasis on European subjects. Sult’s romantic portrayals of historic street scenes and buildings from Europe are executed in transparent\, flowing watercolors\, showcasing his mastery of this difficult and unpredictable medium. Like a modern-day Georgia O’Keeffe\, Bert Sult loves to play with the fluidity of the medium.
