SUMMARY:The Art and Science of Plant Care
DESCRIPTION:Caring for plants is both an art and a science—part intuition\, part know-how. Every gardener\, from beginner to expert\, faces the same essential questions: When should I prune? How much should I water? What’s the best way to plant\, fertilize\, or repot? In this class\, Bryce Lane brings decades of horticultural expertise to demystify these everyday tasks\, showing you not just what to do\, but why it works. \nOver eight weeks\, you’ll explore the fundamental practices that keep gardens thriving\, learning how to perform each one with confidence and purpose. You’ll uncover the science behind good technique—understanding how soil\, water\, nutrients\, and plant biology interact—while also developing the practical judgment that comes only with experience. \nEach session focuses on one key aspect of plant care\, building a complete toolkit for growing healthier\, more resilient plants in any garden setting.

SUMMARY:Propagation Workshop: "Beginner Softwood Cuttings"
DESCRIPTION:How many times have you been in a friend’s garden and wanted to take home one of their favorite plants? Has a neighbor shared a cutting with you and you put it in a vase on the windowsill not knowing what to do with it? Are you a new gardener fascinated by the idea of being able to grow your plant collection inexpensively at home? If this sounds like you\, you should join the JC Raulston Arboretum staff for this hands-on workshop and learn the basics about propagating woody ornamental plants by stem cuttings! \nIn this beginner workshop\, participants learn how to take stem cuttings\, what rooting hormones are\, and how to care for cuttings as they root. Participants start by learning about propagation in a classroom setting and then go out into the gardens for a brief demonstration on how to take cuttings. Back inside\, participants will try their hand at propagating using a selection of cuttings chosen by staff for optimal success. Then\, everyone leaves with a full tray of cuttings from the JC Raulston Arboretum’s collection!

SUMMARY:Building a Garden that Benefits Wildlife
DESCRIPTION:Many wildlife gardening classes make it sound as though all you need to do is plant a few flowers and wait for nature to arrive. In reality\, creating a garden that truly supports birds\, pollinators\, beneficial insects\, reptiles\, amphibians\, and other wildlife takes thoughtful planning. What do animals need to survive? Which plants help most? How do we create habitat in ways that are both beautiful and manageable? \nIn this 4-week course\, you’ll learn practical strategies for building a garden that attracts and sustains wildlife while fitting your space\, goals\, and gardening style. We’ll explore how healthy gardens function as ecosystems\, and how even small home landscapes can provide food\, shelter\, water\, and breeding habitat for a wide range of beneficial creatures. \nYou’ll also learn how to put those ideas into practice through smart plant selection\, layered garden design\, and seasonal maintenance strategies that support wildlife year-round. Along the way\, we’ll discuss pollinator gardening\, helpful garden features\, and how to work with natural systems rather than against them.
