DESCRIPTION:This talk follows Eileen and Mark’s journey to China in search of wild populations of Aucuba chinensis. Eileen will share the experience of collecting wild Aucuba material across its native range\, along with highlights from the expedition and the process of documenting populations for her research. These collections provide the genetic material needed to investigate whether Aucuba omeiensis represents a distinct species from A. chinensis. Back in the lab\, Eileen will outline how DNA extractions and sequencing will be used to investigate genetic diversity and relationships within the group\, and determine whether a distinct species of Aucuba occurs on Mt. Omei.

The program begins at the Bobby G. Wilder Visitor Center where we will get ready for a fun time outside together. Then\, you’ll take a stroll through the garden with Children’s Program staff and volunteers to see all that is happening in the garden\, read a couple children’s books with a garden twist\, and go home with a garden-themed craft created by your little one. \nPlease come dressed for the weather\, as this program is held outdoors. In the case of rain\, activities are moved to a sheltered location. Caregivers stay with children during the program and are encouraged to participate.

DESCRIPTION:Bring your family and join us for a morning of outdoor garden fun! \nGarden Storytimes are a great way for families with preschool children to experience the garden. The program begins at the Bobby G. Wilder Visitor Center where we will get ready for a fun time outside together. Then\, you’ll take a stroll through the garden with Children’s Program staff and volunteers to see all that is happening in the garden\, read a couple children’s books with a garden twist\, and go home with a garden-themed craft created by your little one. \nPlease come dressed for the weather\, as this program is held outdoors. In the case of rain\, activities are moved to a sheltered location. Caregivers stay with children during the program and are encouraged to participate.

DESCRIPTION:Join Angela Mason Foster and Debra Singer-Harter for a creative three-hour workshop exploring the art of making collages with dried\, pressed flowers. Participants will learn how to arrange pressed flowers\, leaves\, and small decorative elements on stretched canvas to create a unique botanical artwork. \nDuring the class\, Angela and Debra will guide you through basic design ideas\, layering techniques\, and methods for attaching delicate pressed materials using matte medium. This workshop is suitable for beginners as well as those who already enjoy working with pressed flowers or mixed media. \nEach participant will create an 8″ x 8″ pressed flower collage on stretched canvas to take home.

SUMMARY:Art and Blooms at the JCRA
DESCRIPTION:Do you admire handmade cards? Join JCRA volunteer and artist\, Debra Singer-Harter\, to have fun making whimsical flower art even if you have no drawing or painting experience! \nIt is that special time at the JCRA when the moonlight shines through the trees. So let’s paint it! We will start by using lines to create simple trees and then add the moon and dark night. We will provide the three blank cards\, watercolor paint and brush. You will paint on the card stock and learn how to blend the colors to create your own style. Each participant can make three cards during this two-hour session.
