SUMMARY:Collecting and Preserving Spring Blooms: A Hands-On Botanical Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Spring offers an unparalleled abundance of color\, fragrance and texture — an ideal season for exploring the art and science of botanical preservation. In this immersive workshop\, participants will learn how to collect\, prepare and press flowers for both artistic and scientific use. \nUnder the guidance of Dr. Angela Mason Foster\, attendees will begin with a guided walk through the JCRA’s gardens\, where they will identify\, collect and record plant specimens. The outdoor session emphasizes responsible collecting practices\, including choosing the best samples for pressing\, understanding plant structure and moisture content\, and documenting essential botanical details such as habitat\, color and date. \nAfter the garden excursion\, the class will reconvene indoors for an in-depth\, hands-on session in pressing technique. Participants should bring their own flower presses from the “Creating and Using a Flower Press” workshop or a similar model. Dr. Foster will demonstrate how to prepare specimens for pressing\, layer materials for even drying\, and preserve vibrant color and shape. She will also share expert tips for troubleshooting common issues such as fading\, mold and curling\, as well as creative ways to display and archive your pressed specimens.

SUMMARY:The Art and Science of Plant Care
DESCRIPTION:Caring for plants is both an art and a science—part intuition\, part know-how. Every gardener\, from beginner to expert\, faces the same essential questions: When should I prune? How much should I water? What’s the best way to plant\, fertilize\, or repot? In this class\, Bryce Lane brings decades of horticultural expertise to demystify these everyday tasks\, showing you not just what to do\, but why it works. \nOver eight weeks\, you’ll explore the fundamental practices that keep gardens thriving\, learning how to perform each one with confidence and purpose. You’ll uncover the science behind good technique—understanding how soil\, water\, nutrients\, and plant biology interact—while also developing the practical judgment that comes only with experience. \nEach session focuses on one key aspect of plant care\, building a complete toolkit for growing healthier\, more resilient plants in any garden setting.

SUMMARY:Photography Walk - "Budget-friendly close-up flower photography" with Mary Louise Ravese\, Bella Vista Photography
DESCRIPTION:When we are able to get a close-up view of flowers\, we can produce beautiful\, intriguing photographs. Many amateur photographers think that to achieve these images you need to invest in a costly macro lens. Fortunately\, that’s not true! \nExtension tubes and close-up diopters (filters) are more affordable accessories that you can use in combination with your existing lenses to enable close-up photography. For the photographer who likes to occasionally dabble with close-up photography\, they are a welcome\, budget-friendly option. \nMary Louise will explain how to use these accessories to successfully achieve close-up images. Then\, under her guidance\, participants can practice close-up photography in the arboretum gardens. \nThis class is suitable for traditional cameras (DSLR and mirrorless).

In the second half\, you’ll build your very own bee hotel — a cozy habitat designed to attract and support gentle native bees like mason bees and leafcutter bees. All materials are provided and included in your registration fee. \nWhat You’ll Take Home: \nA completed bee hotel to help the pollinators in your home garden\nPractical knowledge on creating pollinator-friendly environments\nInspiration to make your space a haven for biodiversity\nWhether you’re a backyard gardener\, nature enthusiast\, or just curious about how you can make a difference\, this workshop is a perfect way to learn\, create\, and contribute to the preservation of our native pollinators. \nSpaces are limited — register early to reserve your spot and help support the bees who support us all!
