WEB EXCLUSIVE Campbell Law School’s new clinic is helping student athletes navigate contract agreements in light of new NCAA rules.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has changed the game for student athletes with their latest announcement that allows athletes to profit from the commercial use of their names, images or likeness (NIL). Throwing student athletes into the world of negotiations, contracts and deals is intimidating, and may leave many vulnerable and underrepresented. That’s where Campbell Law School comes in.

In light of the NCAA’s decision, Campbell Law has launched a pro bono clinic, the Shipman & Wright Sports Law Clinic, to help students navigate the changing environment and the agreements with third parties they might have to engage in concerning the use of their NIL. Heading up the clinic, which will be available to 14 third-year students, is adjunct professor Gary Shipman.

“The NCAA has left administration of NIL to its member institutions, which are suddenly faced with potentially conflicting requirements of their own sponsor contracts, alumni and boosters, and literally thousands of individual student athletes,” Shipman explained. This clinic is aimed at preventing students from being vulnerable; many students can’t afford to hire their own agent or attorney to represent their interests. With the clinic, all prospective clients will go through an eligibility screening and will then be assigned a student for representation under the supervision of a licensed attorney.

“I am thrilled to be able to offer this unique and timely opportunity to our law students, as well as provide a much-needed service to student athletes,” says Campbell Dean J. Rich Leonard. “Our Sports Law Clinic will provide sound legal advice and analysis to this vulnerable population to assist them in realizing the value of their NIL property, while offering student attorneys the chance to develop important legal and practical skills.” Talk about a win-win situation for both athletes and student attorneys!

WEB EXCLUSIVE We know the last thing you want to think about in August is the holidays—but hear us out. If you want to spook up some Halloween fun and jolly merrymaking with Santa, get your tickets now for these hot holiday happenings.

It’s still hot out there, but it’s never too early to make a plan for the most wonderful time of the year. Start figuring out your Halloween costume now, dig out those ugly Christmas sweaters and purchase your tickets for two of New Hope Valley Railway’s most popular train ride events, Track or Treat: Halloween Express and Santa’s Reindeer Roundup Express.

Have a boo-tiful time during spooky season (Oct. 16, 23 and 30) on the Halloween Express, featuring family-friendly spooks like Count Dracula and scenes of flying witches, smoking cauldrons and large jack-o’-lanterns. While waiting to board the train, listen to songs by singing pumpkins and take advantage of all the photo ops; then, once the train gets moving, play Mummy Mayhem, a game where riders search for 13 mummies hidden along the train tracks. Costumes, of course, are highly encouraged.

NHVR Halloween Express

Come Christmastime (Dec. 4, 5, 11, 12 and 18), the Triangle Train is transformed into a winter wonderland. Kiddos and adults alike will get to hop aboard Santa’s Reindeer Roundup Express to help jolly Old Saint Nick find his nine missing reindeer. After you’ve successfully rounded up the reindeer, pay a visit to the big guy back at the rail yard. Santa will be in his sleigh ready to take pics with all of the train riders—perfect for the family Christmas card.

“Many families return each year to our railway to enjoy both our Halloween and Santa trains,” says NHVR marketing representative Tom Hutchinson. “Both ride events offer a fun and unique way for friends and loved ones to spend time together and celebrate the spooky and holiday seasons.”

And if you’re really in the holiday spirit, purchase a ticket for the 2021 Railway Raffle, which supports both NHVR and the North Carolina Railway Museum. Refurbished 3D Theater at NC Science Museum Reopens on Aug. 13

WEB EXCLUSIVE Grab some popcorn and head over to the recently revamped WRAL 3D Theater at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences for some great nature-themed films this weekend.

Sharks, predators and volcanoes—oh, my! The refurbished WRAL 3D Theater at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences is reopening to the public this Friday, Aug. 13, with a 4K laser projector and improved audio system that’s sure to make viewing upcoming movies (see: Volcanoes, Incredible Predators, Great White Shark and Tiny Giants) all the more rawrsome.

The upgraded moviegoing experience is thanks to a grant from the A.J. Fletcher Foundation. Aside from the projector and audio system, the theater now also boasts new carpeting, reupholstered seats, better sound baffling and improvements to the presentation stage.

This weekend, give all the cool new features a go with museum fave Tiny Giants, which follows a chipmunk in a wild wood and a grasshopper mouse in a scorched Arizona desert and their battles once they find themselves alone for the first time. Then, move over Shark Week! Dive into the depths of the ocean with Great White Shark, taking you around the world to learn more about its most feared predator (Hey, Alexa: Play Jaws theme song).

And don’t miss one of the newest features at the theater—tour the ring of fire to learn about the science and adventure behind the world’s volcanoes through Volcanoes 3D.

Then, last but not least, join the hunt with some of Earth’s other major predators with Incredible Predators, which may make you realize those seemingly intimidating animals (e.g. cheetahs) are actually not as scary as you think they are. A Can-Do Attitude

A Can-Do Attitude

WEB EXCLUSIVE AIA Triangle’s CANstruction competition at Raleigh Union Station benefits the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.

Can you help the hungry while partaking in a little friendly competition? Indeed you can, thanks to AIA Triangle’s 5th annual CANstruction competition on Aug. 6, with its mission of providing hunger relief assistance by collecting canned food for distribution to local food banks.

Teams of architects, engineers, contractors and designers, as well as students attending schools of architecture, engineering and design, will assemble at Raleigh Union Station to build a colossal structure made entirely of canned food around the theme of transportation—promoting awareness of public/alternative transportation in the community.

Throughout the day, a panel of local celebs will be judging the structures—with the public to vote on the people’s choice sculpture at 6pm. The winning can sculpture will on display at Union Station for two weeks post event, and after Aug. 20, the sculptures will be disassembled and the cans donated to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina to be distributed for emergency programs like food pantries, soup kitchens, older adult facilities and daycare centers. A beautiful intersection of art and life.

Arrive Downtown early on First Friday to enjoy local exhibitors and entertainment, and take advantage of the stellar food and drink deals; then head to Union Station (with a can-do attitude, of course) for the reveal of the winning can structure. aiatriangle.org/events/canstruction
