Updated 7.5 10:30pm. In a statement from RPD: "Ral Updated 7.5 10:30pm. In a statement from RPD: "Raleigh Police and law enforcement partners responded to multiple incidents Saturday night and Sunday morning across the City involving juveniles and guns. ... In total, 9 people were shot.

Original post: BREAKING: Massive violence erupted across Glenwood South on July 4th, prompting a large police response, including RPD’s SEU (selective enforcement unit), and officers in riot gear.

According to witness reports, multiple shootings occurred between 11:30pm-3am, including near Split, Halcyon and Dogwood, among others. Witnesses reported seeing full riot gear, armored cars, pepper balls and long-range sirens, with people being pushing toward Hillsborough Street, where a separate event then occurred. And according to the RPD Watch Commander, at least one officer was hurt.

As multiple violent incidents unfolded, several bars along Glenwood South have confirmed with RM they chose to shut down as early as 12:30am to protect their patrons and staff. Witnesses report seeing as many as 27 arrests, hearing dozens of gunshots, with several injured and at least one fatality.

As of this posting, RPD has not issued a news release regarding the events, with many questions remaining unanswered. Raleigh Magazine is working to learn more about reports of these eye witness accounts, injuries and the scope of the response.

Stay tuned for updates. We’re working on a larger story about what’s happening and why it’s happening—if you work on Glenwood South or were there we'd love to hear from you.

Personal note: As people who absolutely love Raleigh, this has to stop. No one should be afraid to spend a night out. We have to do better—for businesses, workers, visitors, and everyone who calls this city home. Everyone deserves to feel safe.

UPDATE: The Wilmington Street Station Parking Deck UPDATE: The Wilmington Street Station Parking Deck won’t be sold—for now.

The offer to purchase the popular Downtown parking deck has been withdrawn, so City Council will no longer consider the proposed sale. The move follows an outpouring of public concern from business owners, employees and Downtown visitors over the future of one of Raleigh’s busiest public parking decks.

In a statement, the City said: “We can confirm the offer to purchase the Wilmington Street garage was withdrawn. We recognize the offer created a lot of conversation in the community. We also recognize that this offer potentially provided opportunities to address the City’s stated goal to improve the financial stability of our parking program. As the City grows, we continue to look for efficiencies in our systems so that our residents’ tax dollars deliver the highest level of services for the City.”

What’s next remains to be seen. It’s unclear whether the city will continue looking for another buyer. In the meantime, it’s business as usual: The city-owned garage remains under city control, and the two-hour free parking program stays in place.

Stay tuned for updates.
