Film to Fashion

GoneWithTheWind

There’s a reason why classic movies are deemed “classic”—they withstand the test of time. But can we use the same reasoning when it comes to fashion? Definitely! Katherine Hepburn’s tailored women’s suits are ever present on runways, and Audrey Hepburn’s white button down shirt is a ubiquitous staple in every stylish woman’s closet.

The key, however, to transforming an onscreen look into real life is making it your own. Don’t try to replicate the costume; instead, update it to reflect your personal style. For example, get inspired by Gone With the Wind; Instead of petticoats, choose a vintage black dress and embellish with a striking brooch.

LoveStory

The prep-style chic Ali MacGraw wore in Love Story provides ample inspiration this fall. Swap out her wool coat for a lighter trench, and add bold red Hunter rain boots to the look. The ensemble will keep you fashionable and dry!

Thelma

We often covet the elegant outfits we see on film, but you can also take your cue from more casual looks. Brightly patterned scarves are making a comeback this fall: Louise’s character knew how to tie one on to accessorize plain jeans a blouse.

Making Waves

Making Waves

elie-pleatsMicro-pleats made a splash this spring on the fashion runways with designers such as Stella McCartney and Sonia Rykiel featuring flowing, folded dresses. Pleats aren’t always the most forgiving style but lightweight fabrics for summer are beautiful and breezy. Cinch with a thin belt—above the waist for a youthful, empire look or at the waist for a more classic style.

As layers come off this summer, do the opposite with jewelry: layer multiple chains to create a bold statement. There aren’t many rules to the look. Make sure you vary the lengths of the chains to create almost a waterfall effect. Intermingle gold and silver, pendants and chains, and accessorize in a playful way. Long layered necklaces also look great with silk blouses, a decidedly European look.

Of course, men also can accessorize this summer, but you won’t find a chain around their necks. Instead, bow ties are a dapper style statement that can be worn at a casual get-together or a more formal summer affair. Ties often have a corporate connotation while bow ties offer men an opportunity to express themselves in a sartorial way. Experiment with daring colors, pink or mint, and forgo a jacket for rolled up sleeves and suspenders. But don’t even think about buying a clip-on style—those are for kids—learn to tie one by hand.

Mix & Match: Nautical Styles

Leave it to Coco Chanel to transform a French sailor’s uniform into a timeless fashion statement that prevails today. Classic Breton stripes, metallic trims, button embellishments and the obvious anchor in red, white and blue can be mixed and matched to create multiple looks. Plus, the style can be worn across all ages. We’ve pulled a few key pieces that when paired together create several classic yet contemporary looks.
