Take a Hike at Umstead State Park

Take a Hike at Umstead State Park

Want a nice country hike? No reason to leave Raleigh, instead drive just a couple of miles down U.S. 70 West and take a hike at Umstead State Park.

Explore more than 5,500 acres—the sheer volume of pristine land really is one of Raleigh’s best-kept secrets. If you haven’t been, stop by the visitor center and get a map. There’s a lot to see and do at Umstead State Park.
Sycamore Trail
Difficulty: Moderate
Length: 7.6 miles
Time: 1-3 hours
Family Friendly • Dog Friendly. This trailhead is also located behind the visitor center farther down the road behind the parking lot.

Sal’s Branch Trail
Difficulty: Moderate
Length: 2.7 miles
Time: Normally about 1 hour or less Family Friendly • Dog Friendly. The Sal’s Branch trailhead is located directly behind the visitor center. You’ll find a scenic man-made lake about halfway through the hike.
10 - Pott's Branch Dam
If you follow the loop counterclockwise and take a right turn when you first descend down to Sycamore Creek, you’ll see the remains of an old dam and may be able to get to Sycamore Lake (if the water isn’t too high). It’s a very pretty area and quiet because it’s not on any of the official trails. The rocks in this area can be very slippery even when dry. Be careful. It’s also possible to combine this trail with the Company Mill Trail for a nice 10-12 mile hike.
Rant: Paying for Ice . . . Really?

Rant: Paying for Ice . . . Really?

Include it in the price, already!

Maybe it’s just me, but nothing irritates me more than asking a waiter for more salad dressing or a refill and hearing, “It will be 25 cents; do you still want it?”

It’s not that I’m cheap. I like to eat out, and I do it all the time, but the add-ons of 25 or 50 cents make me think, “Wow, this place is chintzy.” I understand it’s the cost of doing business, but I say include it in the price.

Imagine my disgust recently when I took a client for drinks and ordered bourbon on the rocks—and was charged for the ROCKS! Are you kidding me? Ice is frozen water. It’s not flavored ice or even fancy-shaped—just good ole fashioned ice.

I didn’t pick my drink based on the price. I ordered my favorite bourbon; $1 either way wouldn’t have kept me from ordering the drink I wanted.

I’ve talked to enough bartenders to understand that ordering a drink “on the rocks” instead of “with a splash of _____” requires a bigger whiskey pour. So the “rocks” charge is actually for more ounces of whiskey. I get it. But to itemize rocks on the bill at $1 for every drink?

Come on. What’s next: I order a burger and pay a dollar for the bun?

Quit nickel-and-diming me.

All About Bikes: Cool Gear and Group Rides

All About Bikes: Cool Gear and Group Rides

Few things in the world of a cyclist are as startling as the car you didn’t hear.

Maybe you were in the middle of a hard interval, a beautiful stretch of scenery, or just thinking about that cup of coffee waiting for you back at the cafe. Out of nowhere a car passes and jolts you back to reality and the fact that sometimes the road is a dangerous place.

Varia is an early warning radar system from Garmin.

It will alert you of an approaching vehicle at more than 450 feet while tracking its approach on your Garmin Edge system or the optional display unit. An integrated taillight pulses more intensely to alert the car of your presence as well.

Available September 1 at Inside Out Sports, Raleigh and Cary. It starts at $199 for the sensor alone or $299 for the bundle including the display unit.

Get Results with Interval Training

Get Results with Interval Training

heartAre you pounding the pavement or hitting the gym and not seeing the results you want? It may be time to take a look at your heart rate.

We know what you’re thinking. Of course your heart rate gets up there! You’re running for miles. But to make changes to your body—whether you’re talking about taking off pounds, inches or reducing your blood pressure— you have to not only get your heart rate up, but also back down and then up again. Those changing heart rates are at the foundation of interval training, ensuring you’re working in the targeted heart rate zones that ultimately spike your metabolism, leading to fat burning, weight loss and overall fitness.

Enter Orangetheory Fitness, coming to Raleigh in September, the innovative fitness craze designed for any fitness level. Don a real-time heart monitor that lets you know if you’re working in the target heart rate zones—3,4 and 5—during the 60-minute workout. The goal, regardless of fitness level, is to do 12 to 20 minutes in zones 4 and 5, and 25 to 35 minutes in zone 3. “There is a miscon- ception that you always have to be working in that 4th and 5th zone, but a lot happens during recovery. As you recover, your heart rate comes down, but you are still working in your fat burning zone,” says owner Kristie Shifflette. “This ig- nites your metabolism, giv- ing you that afterburn, with your metabolism continuing to work for 36 hours.” — orangetheoryfitness.com
