International artist descends on Raleigh for an abstract Birdie’s mural masterpiece.
Fayetteville Street just got a much-needed pop of color. Internationally renowned contemporary artist Alex Brewer, better known as HENSE, recently debuted a monumental mural at 150 Fayetteville Street, right in front of Birdie’s Barroom & Kitchen’s outdoor patio and “backyard.”
Brewer’s first-ever piece in NC is characterized by his signature bold, colorful and abstract style—and is poised to “transform Fayetteville Street into a vibrant canvas that will captivate and inspire all who encounter it,” maintains Highwoods Properties Director of Customer Experience Melissa Bessler. Also a first for the artist is painting on the perforated metal of the structure designed by local architecture firm Gensler, which he likens to almost a sculpture.
“I’m excited to be doing something here,” says Brewer, who got involved in the project through former Atlanta BeltLine CEO and current Highwoods EVP/COO Brian Leary, who he worked with indirectly when creating public art pieces for the BeltLine. In an effort to further paint the town, the mural will also be included in Downtown Raleigh Alliance’s art map and DTR’s self-guided mural tour. “Highwoods is excited to help support the arts in Raleigh and create a vibrant place for our community,” adds Bessler. And a vibrant addition to the city it is indeed.
