Village District 🤝 social district

Village District could be getting a little more, ahem, social. Aiming to add to the roster of approved social districts in the Triangle, the proposal first came before Raleigh City Council in mid-October, but was tabled to gather more resident feedback. Many people who live nearby have expressed concerns over security, strewn garbage and fear that “bad behavior” could spill over into the surrounding neighborhoods.

As of press time, a public hearing is being held Thursday, Nov. 14, and the issue is not expected to go before council again until January—with the hope that the social district will go into effect early 2025. Though some Village Districters are opposed to the social district, several businesses already plan to participate, including Postino, Cantina 18, Tazza Kitchen, Goodnights Comedy Club and Flying Biscuit Cafe—to name just a few.

“By designating Village District as a Sip n’ Stroll social district, we’d be able to increase pedestrian activity throughout the entire center to create a more connected and dynamic experience for shoppers,” emphasizes Regency Centers GM Brooke Conn.

Once (or if) the district earns social status, Village frequenters’ll will be able to sip, stroll and shop among the area’s participating establishments—plus in public gathering spaces within the proposed boundaries of Clark Avenue, Daniels Street, Smallwood Drive, Woodburn Road and Cameron Street—making your 2025 Village hangs more spirited and bright, indeed. shopvillagedistrict.com

If you haven’t heard, Cafe Carolina is leaving Village District in 2024. But before you cry in your cappuccino, we’ll give you something to wine for instead. 

Word on the street is Arizona-born “industrial winecafé” Postino WineCafe will be uncorking in that space. Intentionally built as a space for connection—naturally, vino brings us together—the wine cafe’s current iterations serve as odes to the communities in which they sit. With an MO of “leaving people feeling crazy-good,” the grape destination serves up good vibes via familiar, inspired surrounds, a range of bottles apt for both the most casual and most elevated of moments, and a bangin’ menu to boot. They even have a curated Wine Cult experience built for, who else, wine enthusiasts—NTM a Spotify jams playlist because, ya know, music is the “elixir of life.”

To vet the hot goss, we tapped Regency Centers for comment: “Momentum at Village District is strong with exciting concepts to announce in the near future,” says Regency Centers GM Brooke Conn. “With the addition of The Shade Store, One Medical, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, Ballard Designs and Shake Shack, the surrounding community can continue to expect more good news on the horizon.” So, clearly, things are shaking up in the Village District—and here’s hoping Postino is one of these “exciting concepts.”
