Frolicking around Raleigh’s downtown, through its parks or on the greenways while it’s still semi-warm outside, you may have noticed a few eye-catching painted letters on the sides of buildings or on a random rock. These unique, colorful murals are part of Raleigh-based artist Morgan Cook’s #TheAlphabetProjectNC. In collaboration with Downtown Raleigh and Cook’s creative agency MCK Creative, Cook started the project at the beginning of 2020 and had planned to finish the entire 26-letter alphabet in 26 different Raleigh locales by the end of the year, but had to put the project on hold due to the COVID-related quarantine in the spring. So far, he has finished eight letters, each of which are scattered throughout Raleigh—on Instagram, Cook has hinted at finding them at Dorothea Dix Park, the City of Raleigh greenway and on the side of the Lincoln Theatre. Each of the letters are done in a bold, bright, graffiti-like style, and following the completion of the project, there will be a citywide scavenger hunt to find the murals; you can still challenge yourself to find the letters at the beginning of the alphabet now as well! Help Cook pay for the spray paint needed to complete the project by donating at gofundme.com/f/the-alphabet-project and keep up with all of Cook’s work on Instagram at @artofmck.
