Special Olympics North Carolina (SONC) athlete Robin Callaway goes to great lengths to champion a more inclusive world for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Sometimes, those lengths are measured by a 30-story skyscraper. This year, Callaway will rappel 150 Fayetteville St. in Downtown Raleigh for the eighth time.

On Saturday, Sept. 30, over 100 thrill-seekers will get the unique opportunity to rappel a 30-story skyscraper while supporting SONC. Proceeds from the Over the Edge fundraising event will benefit Special Olympics activity in North Carolina. The 2023 event in Raleigh is anticipated to raise more than $100,000, which will contribute to the mission of SONC in cultivating sports opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Individuals must raise a minimum of $1,000 to rappel. Interested participants are encouraged to visit OverTheEdgeNC.com to register before Sept. 30.

People with intellectual disabilities encounter adversities daily. An advocate for inclusivity and a living embodiment of the Special Olympics movement, Callaway is fearless in her efforts to show what she and her fellow athletes are capable of. Nearly 40,000 Special Olympics athletes in North Carolina bravely face challenges every day, on and off the field of play. They are the inspiration for this fundraising event.

“I want to say it gets easier, but every year I forget how high 30 stories is,” says Callaway. “I rappel to show awareness, to show the bravery in me. Anyone can do it.”

For more than 20 years, Callaway has competed with Special Olympics, favoring softball and tennis. As a certified SONC Global Messenger, she is trained to serve as a spokesperson on behalf of the organization. She also serves as a Law Enforcement Torch Run® for Special Olympics North Carolina (NC LETR) Athlete Ambassador, supporting the largest year-round public awareness and grassroots fundraising campaign for Special Olympics. Annually, more than 110,000 dedicated and compassionate law enforcement members carry the Flame of Hope, symbolizing courage and the celebration of diversity while uniting communities around the globe.

In 2020, Callaway became the first-ever athlete from North Carolina to receive the Law Enforcement Torch Run International Executive Council Athlete Award. Her many accolades and achievements, while undoubtedly impressive, could never truly illustrate Callaway and the impact Special Olympics has had on her life.

“Because of Special Olympics, people accept me,” says Callaway. “I can show them that I can do more as a leader. I have opened up about my disability and have people around the entire state supporting me.”

To be one of those people, register now to rappel for SONC, or donate to an individual or corporate team fundraiser at OverTheEdge.com.
