Wilming to Roam

Wilming to Roam

Your go-to guide to a Southern-meets-coastal fall destination.

Fall leaves 🤝 coastal breeze. Soothe your seasonal depression with a slight chill from the river via a quick getaway to Wilmington, North Carolina’s largest coastal city. Bundle up and skip the saltwater rushing over your toes (never mind it’s too cold for that) and trade it for garden explorations, walking tours and historical sites galore—let alone the myriad bites and brews to refuel in between.

Not only does the vibrant riverside city offer an upbeat arts and culture scene, an array of locally owned restaurants and shops, and a World War II battleship, the Port City also touts a charming 230-plus-block historic district feat. moss-draped trees around every corner (it’s giving Savannah and we’re here for it…), ideal for a gorgeous autumnal stroll. Who says the coast isn’t fit for a cool-weather getaway?!

EAT

Kipos photo by Shannon Kelly

Kipos Hellenic Cuisine

It’s all Greek to us… especially when dining at Giorgios Bakatsias’ Hellenic eatery highlighting the sea, naturally, with ~80% of the seafood sourced locally (!). Inspired by Bakatsias’ Greek homeland, the menu is a celebration of the Karista village where he grew up. Mussel up for locally sourced pan-seared grouper, grilled whole fish and NC shrimp, to name just a few fishy selects—paired with Greek wines and an airy atmosphere. Pro tip: Spring for a table in the lush garden patio, from where the name Kipos (meaning “garden”) hails. kiposwilmington.com

Seabird

Land ho! For a literal taste of the Atlantic—think shrimp, oysters, crab and more—look no further than Dean Neff and Lydia Clopton’s celebrated sustainable seafood resto. Featuring weekend brunch and dinner, the rotating menu changes with the seasonality of seafood, sourced locally when possible. Pair with a craft cocktail (Cat’s Pyjamas, anyone?) or an espresso bev during the daytime for a meal worth sailing home for. seabirdnc.com

Olivero

Pickled shrimp, ribeye and a plethora of pasta picks? This flavorful joint has ~olive~ the above. Apart from the extensive menu of carefully curated Spanish- and Italian-influenced New Orleans dishes, the delicious brainchild of Raleigh’s own James Beard-nominated chef Sunny Gerhart concocts creative signature cocktails, moody lighting and kitschy nautical vibes—all the while paying homage to his mother’s family and the influence they’ve had on his cooking. Smooth sailing (and dining!) spotted ahead. oliveroilm.com

DRINK

The Maroon Monkey

The perfect morning stop to prepare for a day of monkeying around—found. Before going bananas around downtown, stop in for a cuppa at this locally owned/operated coffee shop starring a cozy atmosphere and bold menu. Pro tip: The bananas Foster latte and white hot chocolate are ape-solutely delicious. maroonmonkeycoffee.com

Front Street Brewery

Belly up for smooth sippin’ on 485 bourbon and whiskey ops (NC’s largest whiskey selection!) and 14 beers on tap from the city’s longest operating brewery, established in a circa-1865 building that has housed everything from a dentist office to a dry goods store. When hunger hits, dig into Southern cuisine—paired with a beer or bourbon recommended by the bartender. Front-page newsworthy, indeed! frontstreetbrewery.com

Blue Post Billiards

Take the easy shot when imbibing at Water Street’s former sailor hangout and nostalgic billiards hall reputed for its array of pool tables, Skee Ball, darts, air hockey, arcade games and the like. Bust a move to a complete playlist of ’80s hits and keep your eyes peeled for any unusual activity—aka the ghost of an 18th century bartender said to roam around. Probably the effect of one too many drinks… right? facebook.com/bluepostbilliards

New luxe glamping experience on the Cape Fear River

Not an outdoorsy person, you say? Allow us to change your mind. Glamping is the ideal way to combine comfort and adventure—and skip a lot of the work normally associated with an overnight foray into the forest. And, P.S., camping in a fully equipped modern luxury wagon still counts as camping btw.

Enter The Cozy Heron, a new glamping resort from Cape Fear River Adventures (CFRA) in Lillington (a short hour drive from Raleigh), now open for bookings—with its grand opening slated for April.

Stacked with five handcrafted, made-in-the-USA wooden Conestoga wagons—each equipped with heat and air conditioning; a king-size bed; two bunk beds; and a kitchenette complete with a refrigerator, microwave and coffeemaker—this slumber space has all the amenities and s’more (!). To boot, the wagons are nestled along the banks of the Cape Fear River, allowing campers to drink in
impeccable views.

“We wanted to create an environment where you can experience an outdoor adventure with all the comforts of home,” says The Cozy Heron owner Ilia Smirnov. “The wagons will encourage people to get outdoors and enjoy all the river and surrounding area have to offer.”

For those who don’t mind stepping outside their comfort zone (read: the comforts of luxe wagons), CFRA also hosts several outdoor adventures—from kayaking and paddleboarding rentals, classes and excursions to river tubing and canoe trips—and Raven Rock State Park is nearby, if hiking is your thing. After all that activity, you can nosh on a slice of pizza and sip a craft beer or two at the on-property Lost Paddle Tavern.

No doubt an in-tents experience, Smirnov says “glamping is unique because it combines the joy of the outdoors with the comforts of modern homes. You get to experience the feel of nature all around you while enjoying the conveniences of everyday living.” Sounds like the perfect recipe for happy campers, no? capefearadventures.com

What’s SUP

What’s SUP

Stand-up paddleboarding on the Triangle’s lakes and rivers makes for a SUPper time.

Craving a water-filled adventure close to home this summer? Stand-up paddleboarding on the Triangle’s lakes and rivers is right up your alley. Not only is it low-cost, but you don’t have to drive a hundred miles to do it—and it provides the perfect excuse to do some local exploring. Just don’t find yourself up the creek without a paddle (had to). Here are four great places to keep calm and paddle on.

Falls Lake

Adventure on this 12,000-acre reservoir in the Triangle via WakeRack, a grab-and-go paddleboard rental company that allows you to rent gear for up to three hours at a time for just 10 bucks an hour. The sturdy, light and inflatable boards (aka easy to fit in any vehicle and transport to pretty much any launch point along Falls Lake!) make for the perf perch to get some exercise, tan or perfect a yoga pose for that desirable Insta pic. Namaste bendy!

Lake Johnson

Nestled in the woods just a short drive from NC State, Lake Johnson offers rental boats and personal paddle crafts, but the best way to see the surrounding area is by paddleboard—natch. Grab a board from WakeRack (about five minutes from Lake Johnson’s Waterfront Center) and launch straight into the water, where you can float under piers, beside trails, and around the park’s vibrant curtain of oaks and pine. You’ll be chillin’ like a villain in no time.

Jordan Lake

This one’s for the outdoorsy types. Start your day with a paddle sesh on the 14,000-acre reservoir (keep your eyes peeled for bald eagles, osprey and other wildlife!); then take a dip in one of the lake’s seven swim beaches to cool down. And if you’re really feeling frisky, bring a tent to settle into one of the campsites for a night under the stars.

Cape Fear River

Run some rivers Pocahontas-style via Cape Fear River Adventures, which offers SUP rentals—plus kayak rentals, tubing, whitewater rafting and scenic rafting (!). Spend the whole day lazing up and down the river’s miles of unspoiled landscape riddle with turtles, herons and more, or book a paddleboard yoga sesh to catch some Zen.
